A House by the Mapou

By Heidi Reed

Biography & memoir | eBook

Weeks after the cataclysmic earthquake struck Haiti on January 12, 2010, the author, a 39-year old singleton with cats who'd fallen into humanitarian-relief work by accident, was sent by her boss to lend a hand. On her way to the disaster zone, she reflects on how far she's come to overcome her own shaky past. Through the locals she meets, immediately after the quake and later in 2011, the author realizes the richness that comes from living in Haiti's heart-centered world.

Born in 1970, Heidi Reed grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. After studying film, broadcast communications, and creative writing at San Jose State, San Francisco State, and the New Zealand Film and Television Training School, Heidi got her bachelor of arts degree from Vermont College in 1998. After living in over 16 different cities (abroad and in the USA), Heidi moved to Rhode Island in 2007. After responding to an ad on Craigslist, Heidi joined the world of international development. She has since traveled internationally to such places as Ghana, Haiti, Ethiopia, and Burkina Faso.
