Can I Eat It? (Gluten-Free Family Recipes)

By Kate Hardie

Food & drink | eBook

Can I Eat It? provides inspiring gluten-free family meals, tasty snacks, school lunch box ideas and party treats, appropriate for birthday parties, play dates, school trips etc and are appetising and visually stimulating for both coeliac and non-coeliac families alike. When Kate Hardie’s son was diagnosed with coeliac disease at just 18 months old, her family faced a lifestyle change immediately, being spun into a whole new world of gastronomy. Coeliac disease is an auto-immune disease with no cure and is one of the most common lifelong diseases in the Western world, with approximately 1 in 100 people living with the condition. It is notoriously difficult to diagnose, is incurable and can only be managed with a strict lifelong diet by removing all wheat, barley, oats and rye. The mum of 3 young children was inspired to write her first gluten-free family recipe book as resources aimed specifically at families were limited. She wanted Can I Eat It? to have a contemporary feel and for it to sit comfortably with other “must have” family recipe books, as well as with the “allergy” recipe books which can seem segregated. Her passion and tenacity to achieve Can I Eat It? is evident when you see that she took complete control of the book. No food and prop stylists, food photographers, editors or designers. Just an emphatically creative girl who loves to cook with an added interest of protecting her son. Just as her little boy, William has asked at least once a day from the moment he could talk, ‘Can I Eat It?’ The answer to that is, ‘Yes, William you can’ and that is how the title of the book evolved.
