Chapter I

In those years, when I was a little over twenty, I was sent by my employer, the subsidiary of a US textile company in Argentina, to work in their headquarters located in New York City for a training period of approximately two years. During the few initial weeks I was staying at a hotel in Manhattan but then I decided to rent an apartment mainly for economic reasons, since to pay my expenses of all kinds I received a monthly income of 450 dollars, which at that time allowed living in that city though in an unpretentious way. Another intimate reason was to try myself to the task of managing a house by my own means, without the services provided by a hotel; the latter was ultimately a test of autonomy and independence. After unofficially consulting with my colleagues at work, a secretary born in Argentina who was serving as my counselor recommended to search in a certain area of Brooklyn, and I fortunately decided to follow her advice. The reasons given for the recommendation had to do with the tranquility of the neighborhood and its good subway connections with my two workplaces, the headquarters located in 1407 Broadway and a textile institute that I attended daily in W4th Street, both in Manhattan. I finally rented an apartment in an old house of a certain well-preserved historical type, in the borough of Brooklyn, specifically in a neighborhood located on the bay, and called Brooklyn Heights, full of stories about the War of Independence of the United States and George Washington and his army in particular. The neighborhood contrasted with the rest of Brooklyn, at that time quite troublesome and even dangerous due among other things to ethnic turmoil.
