The Dreamcatcher

The first time I saw you
Is etched indelibly on my memory.
The July morning as sultry as your stare.
Intense and penetrating.
The environment hostile,
You were a blazing beacon of light.

Catch my dreams, I ask you.
Although you know not they are there.
Hold them close to your heart
And treasure them…

Aloof and unobtainable.
So you seemed to me then.
Detached and professional.
I could speak only of reports
When I wanted to sing your name to heaven
And summon you to me.

Catch my dreams, I ask you.
Although they mean nothing to you.
Hold them close to your heart
And treasure them…

Then came my manumission.
The shackles of my bondage freed,
The manacles of my servitude stripped from me.
I felt a peace
Tempered only by my desire.
For you.

Catch my dreams, I ask you.
You steal them from me, an unknowing thief in my night.
Hold them close to your heart
And treasure them…

Offers met with rejection,
Tempered by gifts scarcely wanted and awkward.
It cannot be, you said.
Too many walls between us.
I smile at you.
And walk away.

Catch my dreams, I ask you.
Although you do not desire them.
Hold them close to your heart
And treasure them…

I travel to the north, but you find me.
Insistent and unexplaining.
I take what you have to give
Without question or demand.
I lie without sleep, knowing only that
You have become my Lagan-love.

Catch my dreams, I ask you.
You demand them from me.
Hold them close to your heart
And treasure them…

To the urban sprawl I take you,
Far from Florence or Rome,
But the choice is yours.
A secret place
In which to hide away,
Buried in the shadows of an endless night.

Catch my dreams, I ask you.
And keep them hidden from sight.
Hold them close to your heart
And treasure them…

We go where two worlds live together,
And you show me your way.
In the battle of wills that ensues, there is no victor.
Heady on wine and your white golden teardrop
You seek in vain for the sweet mountain fruit
And I bring you to your home.

Catch my dreams, I ask you.
For they are nothing without you.
Hold them close to your heart
And treasure them…

Amigo. You cut me. Again and again.
There can be no more for us than this.
It is forbidden. Anathema.
You will not speak its name.
But lost in your loneliness,
Still you demand your verse.

Catch my dreams, I ask you.
For I no longer want them myself.
Hold them close to your heart
And treasure them…

Self doubt and uncertainty wrack me.
Can we really never be?
A valley is cut, edgy and ragged, through my soul
As I try to walk away.
But you hold me fast,
Enraptured. Captive in your golden chains.

Catch my dreams, I ask you.
For I am in your thrall.
Hold them close to your heart
And treasure them…

And so you call me to you.
And I deliver myself entirely
As you feign disinterest.
Back on the battlefield,
Your words printed and unforgiving.
But despite yourself, you start to believe…

Catch my dreams, I ask you.
I give them to you freely.
Hold them close to your heart
And treasure them…

My uncertainty now becomes yours.
Revealing what has long been close hidden.
Feeling what has long been unfelt.
The word nearly comes but remain as initials. MK.
Like the eternal name of Y_____ which must not be writ in full.
And you demand of me once more.

Catch my dreams, I ask you.
I surrender them all to you.
Hold them close to your heart
And treasure them…

It’s not the devil that tempts you.
Lucifer, perhaps. Cast down from heaven.
Begotten of Light. God’s chosen one,
Ever darkening with his fall.
But remaining still ever an angel.
Bestowing ecstasy and guilt. His gift. To you.

Catch my dreams, I ask you.
They are yours entirely.
Hold them close to your heart
And treasure them…

At the ancient sign of the swan
Your veil of secrecy slips away from you
And the world sees us, radiant in the light of the moon.
In the chill spring night
You love me like a tiger,
And, against your better judgment, you set free the word I yearn to hear.

Catch my dreams, I ask you.
And with them my heart and soul.
Hold them close to your heart.
And treasure them…

Your strength is our towering fortress.
Your demands leave me breathless, needing more.
Your beauty is my battle cry ‘amanda mia!’
Your body is my temple and I your high priest.
Your insecurities lie with you like a lily.
Your fears I take in my hand and crush them to dust.

Catch my dreams, I ask you.
And let them live with yours.
Hold them close to your heart
And treasure them…

What will become of the lovers?
Like you I gaze into the crystal void
But I too find no answers. Only hope. And love.
Look not to yesterday.
Look not to tomorrow.
For we have the flickering heartbeat of today.

Catch my dreams, I ask you.
For they are no longer my own.
Hold them close to your heart
And treasure them…

Treasure them.
