Crack! Crunch! Melissa smashed against the side of the carriage as it pitched to the right. Pain shot through her arm and the sound of the horses whinnying filled the quiet evening.

“Sorry miss,” came the voice of the driver. “One of our wheels broke. Are you alright?”

Melissa struggled to poke her head out of the small window. “I’m fine, James. Can you fix it?”

James jumped down from the carriage. “I’ll fetch a cartwright.” And with that, he turned and ran.

Melissa watched as he left the pool of light cast by the carriages lamps and disappeared into the darkness beyond. Lost to sight, she listened to his echoing footfalls fade into silence.

Alone, Melissa became aware of her surroundings – the plush purple fabric, the golden cords, and the maple paneling of her box in the darkness. Outside there were no colors - only shades of black. The squares of the cobblestone road, the shadow cast by a wall in the light from a sliver of moon above, hewn granite blocks of the walls stretching into the star spatted blackness of the sky.
