Dark Night, Black Horse

By J.G. Harlond

General fiction, Short stories, Literary fiction | eBook

Based on a true story, “Dark Night, Black Horse”, relates events that occurred in the small town of Coín in southern Spain, in 1936. In the early days of the Civil War, young Paco Martín’s father, Diego, is running contraband across mountain passes into his home town. One very dark night Diego is stopped by the local Guardia, but they are more interested in his young black stallion than contraband goods. Then young Paco is caught selling American cigarettes and the authorities close in. Tipped off by neighbours, Nationalist troops requisition Diego’s magnificent horse for the war. Eight-year-old Paco thinks he knows a way to get Lucero back, though, and hide him. Can the courage and resourcefulness of a young boy save this splendid horse from one of the cruellest of wars?

Originally from the south west of England, J.G Harlond (Jane) studied and worked in various different countries before finally settling in rural Andalucía, Spain. Her historical fiction features many of the places she has visited, along with flawed rogues, wicked crimes, and the issues of being an outsider. Apart from writing fiction Jane looks after a variety of horses. She has raised and trained four generations of Spanish bred horses and knows all about the more demanding side of caring for equines.
