Doodling

By Jonathan Gould

Comedy & satire, Fantasy | eBook

Semi-finalist in the 2011 Goodreads Choice Awards, Humor category. Neville Lansdowne fell off the world. Actually, he did not so much fall off as let go. The world had been moving so quickly lately and Neville was finding it almost impossible to keep up. "Doodling" is an engaging comic fantasy which relates the events that befall Neville after he finds himself abandoned by the world and adrift in the middle of an asteroid field. Douglas Adams meets Lewis Carroll (with just a touch of "Gulliver’s Travels") as Neville wanders through his new home, meeting a variety of eccentric characters and experiencing some most unexpected adventures.

I’ve lived in Melbourne, Australia all my life, except when I haven’t (all right, I admit to at least two stints in the USA – Albany, New York and Seattle, Washington). I never deliberately set out to be funny. For a while, I actually tried to be serious, but that only made people laugh more. So in the end I decided I might as well go with the flow. I’ve done quite a bit of comedy writing, both for the theatre (university revues) and radio. I’ve even had a couple of attempts at the great Australian sitcom (maybe the less said about them the better). But in the end, it was the written form that won me over. I love writing stories, and I’m always searching for something new. My stories can be a bit tricky to describe. You may think of them as comic fantasies, or modern fairytales for the young and the young at heart. I want to surprise and delight readers. I want to get them to see the world in ways they never considered before. I want my readers to smile and laugh, and occasionally even shed a tear. Over the years, my stories have been shortlisted in a number of writing competitions, including The Age Short Story Competition (The Age is a leading Australian newspaper), The Age Funny Short Story Competition, and the Goodreads Choice awards. My writing has been compared to Douglas Adams, Monty Python, A.A. Milne, Lewis Carroll, the Goons, Dr Seuss, Terry Pratchett, and even Enid Blyton (in a good way).
