Finding Agnetha

By Réal Laplaine

General fiction | Paperback, eBook

An eleven year-old boy, living in a troubled home in Buffalo New York, finds solace from the violence around him by listening to ABBA songs and watching their music videos. Inspired by ABBA, he decides he wants to follow a musical career, but first he wants to see ABBA perform live, on stage. The only problem is that the Swedish pop-band hasn't performed together for thirty years, and no one, the band included, seems to think it will ever happen. The young boy makes a plan. He runs away from home, making it to Sweden, in search of Agnetha Faltskog, the famous blond of ABBA. With police in America and Sweden searching for him, the young Morie overcomes impossible odds as he touches the heart of everyone he meets, none of whom believe he can ever possibly achieve his vision - not even Agnetha. Whether you are a fan of ABBA or not, the story will inspire you and it reminds us all that no dream is impossible.

I write to inspire, to light fires in people, to kick crusty old mediocrity in the head, to help open doors to new worlds, new dimensions, new ideas and ultimately to a better culture and a better world. One where intelligence, creativity and dreams transcend war, hatred and greed. I believe we were meant to aspire to great things - not just to be caretakers for one tiny planet, barely a grain of sand in a universe just waiting to be explored. All but two of my books so far fall into a category called high-concept thrillers. What is that? Definitions vary depending on who you ask, but in my view of it, since I write in that world, the high-concept thriller covers many sub-genres of thrillers, such as crime, scifi, geopolitical and suspense, all of which I write in, and what makes it a high-concept thriller is the originality and uniqueness of the idea which drives the book from the very outset. Whereas a romance novel is usually predictable, appealing to emotions, sultry love scenes and even betrayal, the high concept thriller presents a unique twist which instantly conceptualize an entirely different platform in the reader's mind. A high-concept romance, if there is such a thing, would see the man falling in love with, let's say, a woman from another dimension - thus converting it from the norm to the unusual. Such novels as Angels and Demons (Dan Brown), or The Martian (Andy Weir) might be seen as high-concept thrillers. The concepts themselves drive the story and the characters are developed along the way and add to the appeal.
