It Ain't Easy

By Kesia Alexandra

Short stories | Paperback, eBook

"It Ain't Easy" is a collection of short stories on growing up in Washington, DC. If you think it's all memorials and museums, you're mistaken. This collection explores the every day lives of those who reside in the city— from the around the way girls and boys in the hood to the private schools on the privileged side of town. "It Ain't Easy" shows one of America's most talked about cities in a way it is rarely seen; through the eyes of the people.

Kesia Alexandra was born in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania to Paul and Anita Webster. She was raised in Washington, DC by her mother and attended Sidwell Friends School from pre-kindergarten until fourth grade. In fourth grade she began attending Brightwood Elementary School (now Brightwood Education Campus) half-day. The other half of the day she trained in figure-skating and in the evening she was homeschooled. In 2001, Kesia's mother was sentenced to seven years in prison. Aspirations of being an Olympic figure skater were put to the side but the passion for reading implemented early in life never burned out. Kesia returned to Sidwell Friends and without any parent or guardian monitoring her daily comings and goings, academic grades became a roller-coaster and remained as such for most of her middle school and high school careers. Time which probably should have been devoted to school work was instead spent on personal writing in an journal and eventually fictional. The stories Kesia created ultimately felt more real than life at private school or in the various homes she lived in. It wasn't until Kesia got in trouble for writing a gossip website at school that her mother discovered her skills as a writer. Uninterested in and unable to punish her daughter from prison, Anita instead encouraged Kesia to begin focusing her own stories, insisting that her writing was good, although perhaps to "real" for her private school peers. Little did she know Kesia had already completed (and thrown away) a short novel about a young city girl named Shanay. It was around 2004 when the ideas for "Freshman Year: Bullies Beware" began to circulate. Ten years later, it was completed and published. Kesia still has nightmares of failing high school biology. But in the end, she graduated from Sidwell and went on to study English and African-American studies at Boston University. Kesia has completed numerous short stories and a coming of age novel as well as coauthored two adult novels with her mother. She currently lives in Washington, DC and is working on the second book in the Tiara Johnson series, which will follow "Freshman Year: Bullies Beware."
