Murder at the Retreat

By Gail Matelson

Crime & mystery, Religion & spirituality, General fiction | Paperback, eBook

Ten students are enrolled in the month-long retreat program at Ward Pipper’s Estate. Their personalities are radically different. At times, their motive for attending the program puts them at odds… but none of them knew they'd be in the middle of a murder investigation. Lieutenant Artier and Detective Craig are in a bind. They must solve the murder before the retreat ends since the suspect pool includes both students and estate residents. With only days to spare, Artier and Craig uncover long-held secrets, hidden agendas and another open murder investigation that may or may not be connected. Even Ward Pipper, the visionary and creator of the Estate, is pressured by the police to reveal meanings behind old symbols and past indiscretions. However, the end goal is pure… the journey may be fraught with dark trails, old secrets, and illegal and promiscuous trespasses… but it’s also filled with crystal clear spiritual insights, life-altering transformations and a deeper understanding of what it means to live in the moment.

It wasn't until I returned from a year-long, solo driving trip around the United States that I wrote my first book, a personal memoir that I haven't as yet published. Thoroughly enjoying the experience of writing, I spontaneously wrote my first mystery novel. The experience was so 'novel', the characters so willing to tell their own story, that I never stopped writing. Twenty-one books and seventeen years later, my unique stories cover a wide spectrum, from metaphysical fiction in "Last 90 Days, Archie Trilogy Book 1," and magical realism in "Between the Trees," to a psychological thriller in "The Building." Blending multiple genres, my stories have inspiring stories of transformation, as well as humorous and romantic threads woven into the plots.
