Murder at the Retreat

By Gail Matelson

Crime & mystery, Religion & spirituality, General fiction | Paperback, eBook

The students have high expectations as they begin their month-long spiritual retreat program. They have no idea that they will also land smack dab in the middle of a murder investigation. They look forward to learning about such positive concepts as a balanced life, expanded sense of Self, the art of silence, the clear mind technique and what it means to live in the moment. They certainly don’t want to be ensconced with someone capable of deception and murder. The droll Lieutenant Artier and his sidekick, Detective Craig must act fast. They must interview all possible suspects before the retreat program ends and the students leave the estate. With only days to spare, Artier and Craig finally narrow the scope of the investigation when they uncover a long-held secret which leads to a credible motive. Although the retreat journey is fraught with dark trails, old secrets and promiscuous trespasses, it is also filled with crystal clear spiritual insights, life-altering transformations and a deeper understanding of what it means to live in the Now.

After a fantastic, year-long road trip in 2000, I stopped long enough to pen my personal memoir. Never intending to publish such a private story, I spontaneously began to write my first novel, a murder mystery with more twists and turns than the U.S. highways I recently traveled. The experience was so 'novel', the characters so willing to tell their own story, that I never stopped writing. Twenty-two books and eighteen years later, my unique stories cover a wide spectrum; from humorous metaphysical fantasy in "Surprise Ending, Book One of the Grand Finale Trilogy," to a psychological thriller in "Building Murder, Hidden Mystery Series Book 4." Blending multiple genres is my favorite way to tell a story. Focusing on the psychological aspects of a murder mystery intrigues me. Adding a murderous twist to an inspiring tale adds layers. Weaving opposing threads in and out of a plot creates a new imaginative reality... one that I hope you’ll enjoy. Thank you for supporting my passion for writing!
