Once Around the Sun

By Melanie Steyn

Literary fiction, General fiction | Paperback, eBook

"Once Around the Sun" introduces the Lee family: Dong-ju, the 12 year-old son — boisterous, exuberant and curious; Ji-young, the 16-year-old daughter, ripped from childhood and thrown into an adult world too soon; Yun-hwa, defined as a wife and a mother, but searching to be just herself; and Kyu-ah, the grandmother, looking back on a life full of heartache, but also forward to the legacy she will leave through her family. Each chapter represents a season and covers the story of one member of the family. These start out as simple tales of ordinary life, but soon unfold into extraordinary accounts of spiritual awakening." --- Marilyn Roberts, Semyeung University.

Melanie Steyn lived in South Korea for ten years, where she worked as a university lecturer and did the research for this novella. Most of all, she experienced the four dramatic seasons and enjoyed friendships and varied experiences, all indirectly encapsulated here. She is still lecturing in English in Cape Town. Her first novel, Theo's Own Donkey, is set in the great Karroo, South Africa, but she lives in Simon's Town, near her three children and their families.
