Peter Pan Wears Steel Toes

By Laura Hesse

Action & adventure, General non-fiction, Biography & memoir, Environment & nature | Paperback, eBook

Adventure! Awe! Terror! And no tan lines! Imagine watching the float plane’s pilot wave goodbye as he flies back to civilization, leaving you to spend the next ten days in the bush working with a complete stranger with nothing but a tent, a canoe, a few boxes of food, and only a radio to make do with! That is the life of a timber cruiser in northern Ontario. From ball lightning to freak summer storms, hungry bears to friendly skunks, it was a summer like no other.

Armed with a technical diploma in forestry, Laura moved suburbia to a tent in the bush, seeking adventure and a life with meaning. It was the early 1980's, a time when women were just starting to enter fields that were previously dominated by men. It was a time of change and where dreams were not only possible, but encouraged. Laura worked in the field of forestry for ten years, and likes to say: "when an outhouse became a luxury item, I knew it was time to leave forestry and move on." Laura lives on Vancouver Island where excursions into the bush are now on horseback or via her kayak.
