Joanna Campbell

Tying Down The Lion, Joanna's debut novel from Brick Lane Publishing, is available now - a family road trip to Berlin during the Cold War, complete with the spillage of secrets and the tension of travel to a divided city. Will their battered Morris Traveller bring them to their destination? And will home still be where they left it? Her short story collection, When Planets Slip Their Tracks, will be published by Ink Tears Press in the autumn of 2015. Joanna Campbell was born in Hayes, Middlesex and was a painfully shy child. Today she lives near Stroud, Gloucestershire. She is married and has three daughters. She has a degree in German from Exeter University and has taught both English in Germany and German in England. As part of her degree course, which included the study of East Germany, Joanna lived in West Germany for a year, where she taught English. All the people she met were keen to share their experiences of both the Second World War and the Cold War in which they were immersed. Most of all, they were enchanted that an English girl could, despite past and present hostilities, choose to live in their country, learn their language and try to understand how the ordinary person felt. Joanna is a qualified proofreader. She has also worked as a secretary, retail manager and financial adviser during the eighties, mainly because she liked having big hair and shoulder-pads. Her prizewinning stories have been published in Writers' Forum and The New Writer magazines. She has also written for women's magazines, including Woman's Weekly and The People's Friend. She has been shortlisted five times for the Bridport Prize and three times for the Fish Prize. Her collection of stories reached the shortlist of the 2012 Flannery O'Connor Award. In 2013 she came second in the William Trevor/Elizabeth Bowen International Short Story Competition and won the local prize in the Bath Short Story Award. Among other competition success, she won the first prize with Exeter Writers in 2011 and came second with the Scottish Association of Writers in 2012.

A fascinating story about a Jewish family, and especially the children, in pre-World War 2 Paris. Excellent storytelling. The saga of the family holds your interest thru the end. It leaves you wanting to know more about the characters and their lives. A gem.
