Rule Of Seven

By John F Tuckerman

Comedy & satire, Romance, General fiction | eBook

When you’re down and out how do you find love? Simple—Date seven people then go back to the best of the bunch and you will have your match. This is the strategy Sophia, a street psychologist complete with her Lucy-Van-Pelt-styled plywood booth, gives to Owen. But it’s not cheap ten-cent advice she’s doling out; her Rule of Seven is mathematically and evolutionarily tested and has been guiding the creatures of the earth in their search for mates for millions of years. With the help of his three skeptical friends, who are eager to offer up their own mocking crackpot strategies, Owen sets out on his quest but discovers that while simple rules may work for the lower organisms, when applied to the complex human brain, there are complications. The choice of our conscious mind is often at odds with our unconscious desires and the co-evolutionary dance the sexes have been engaged in for millennia has driven each to deception—Owen discovers that those who make up his list, and even his street shrink, are not who they appear to be. To get what he truly wants, Owen, with the guidance of his street psychologist and her bag of tricks, will have to work his way through this mess that our complicated ape brains have mired the lonely in. Rule of Seven blends comic book wisdom and evolutionary psychology into a story of one man’s quest for love in the modern world.

John Tuckerman holds a Master’s Degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Toronto where he studied mate choice and mating strategies in animals. He even published a scientific paper on the subject entitiled: Reliable acoustic cues for mate preference in a katydid (Scudderia curvicauda, Orthoptera:Tettigoniidae). That paper contains many graphs and equations, but zero laughs. To redress the balance, he wrote Rule of Seven. He lives and writes in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.
