Shivani's Dance of Destruction - A Novel in Four Movements

By S. Giga Patney

Literary fiction, Religion & spirituality | Paperback, eBook

Shivani, a woman of colour, is an artist of ballet and contemporary dance with Ballet B.C. based in Vancouver, Canada. She is talent spotted by a producer/director in the Bombay film industry and is invited to visit him in Mumbai. She is appalled to find a culture of greed, competition, corruption and dirty money underlying the vacuous and shallow level of film content. Through a contact on the Mumbai stage, she meets a group of Indian feminists who are trying to bring to the attention of the world the appalling record in India of female foeticide, deaths of infant and young girls at the hands of their family, and the killings and suicides of married women. Shivani, her mind stirred by this information, collaborates with a troupe of Bharata Natyam dancers and choreographs a two-part dance drama, Sati-Sitayana and Parvati Tandav, to expose the murders of female foetuses, female children and women in India. The Hindu chauvinists, and some politicians and film producers are up in arms and even demand Shivani's death. The Muslim fundamentalists, after the initial glee, also join in when they learn that a young woman in hijab was shown being killed by her father and brothers in the dance drama. Shivani has to go into hiding but responds by writing an open letter to the President of India and the United Nations and makes the videos of her dance drama freely available on the Internet. The last movement of the novel is Shivani's narrow escape from India and her dance on the world stage of human rights. The novel unfolds in the form of four movements of music for a Bharata Natyam dance drama.
