Sorting out Charlie

By Liam Robert Mullen

Young adult, General fiction | eBook

Thirteen year old Charlie Evans finds himself in trouble with the law because of his love for fast cars and his dubious taste in friends. A Dubliner living in Gorey, County Wexford, the move to the country has unsettled the youngster, and he has also been badly affected following the death of his grandfather - a man he was particularly close to. In a radical move, following on from advice given by a Community Liaison Officer, his parents decide to pack Charlie off to India for a year's schooling. At first, Charlie rebels against this, but he realises he will have to go. India proves to be a culture shock. However, the magic of India soon begins to tell on Charlie, and he begins to partake in sport, especially cricket and rock climbing. Gradually his mindset begins to change, his school grades improve, and the influence of the Kapoor family and their associates, start him on the path to a slow transformation. Ultimately this YA debut novel explores the troubles experienced by a rebellious teenager and of how he finds redemption through a mixture of being removed from his comfort zone, new friendships, sport and a radically different culture than anything experienced heretofore. The story combines humour and tragedy.
