Speaking of Love

By Angela Young

General fiction, Literary fiction, Romance | Paperback, eBook

Why do we find it so difficult to say the things that matter the most? Parents fail their children and those same children abandon their parents; lovers grow apart and, occasionally, mental disintegration prohibits communication altogether. Iris experiences pain, loneliness and fear. Her daughter, Vivie, longs for love but thinks herself unlovable. And Matthew, Vivie’s would-be lover, fails to say how he feels. Speaking of Love is nonetheless a novel about hope and the restoration of trust, a novel that shows how stories can help make sense of our complicated internal worlds. When a single moment brings all the characters together there is an opportunity for years of mistrust, hopelessness and loneliness to give way to reconciliation and, most of all, the opportunity for each person to find the courage to say what is in their hearts.

In 2001 I was awarded an MA in Creative Writing from Middlesex University. My first novel, SPEAKING of LOVE, was published by Beautiful Books in 2007, when I was 56. I take courage from the sentence on the flyleaf of E. Annie Proulx’s THE SHIPPING NEWS: ‘E. Annie Proulx published her first novel, POSTCARDS, in 1991 at the age of 56.’ Sadly Beautiful Books went out of business, but SPEAKING of LOVE is available as an ebook from amazon in the UK and in the USA. My second novel, THE DANCE of LOVE, is published by Buried River Press, a new imprint of Robert Hale Publishers, in the UK on 31 July, in both paperback and ebook, here, in the UK: http://ow.ly/xnDuK My third is a work in progress called FOR the LOVE of LIFE. The three novels are very different in tone and voice, era and setting, but they all have in common the difficulty we humans face when we try to talk about the things that matter the most.
