Swell

By Rod McRiven

General fiction, Literary fiction, New adult fiction | Paperback, eBook

"Though it is only eight o'clock in the morning, he already knows there is a good chance he will have killed himself before the afternoon is out." His mother protected him from evil and taught him the art of being invisible so he might live in the world without being wholly a part of it. Playing the games she devised, he learned that the inevitable is not always predictable. Yet, even after cheating death in the bloodiest of all wars, he gambles his own life in one final challenge. Whether he wins or loses depends upon the whimsical desires of a beautiful, voluptuous young woman. But can she save him? The man at the pitiless heart of this story is without any redeeming quality; so feature-less he doesn't even warrant a name, and yet from the very beginning there's something about him, a faint, almost indiscernible incongruity which ignites the curiosity. Questions need to be answered. . By the end, you will realise there are many ways to dissect the life of a human being and that the answers might conceal much more than they reveal. . Swell is compelling and provocative, a story of deception and manipulation. It tells of twisted love and the dispassionate hand of fate, the spiralling deviance of a mother's games and her relentless desire to control even from beyond the grave. It's a tale for the 21st Century yet the prose transports the sense of a grainy black and white movie, a Romance Noir, with its stark imagery and poignant drama drenched with connotation.
