The Civilian Bomb Disposing Earl

By Kerin Freeman

Biography & memoir | Hardback, eBook

Jack Howard, GC, born into the formidable House of Howard, sailed to Australia at 17, where he became farmer and lumberman. Later, he received his degree with first class honours. Jack married Mimi Crawford, a much applauded British dancer and actress. Mad Jack executed a daring mission for the British government in 1940 in Paris. Under the noses of advancing Germans he snatched millions of pounds worth of diamonds and heavy water (the only kind in the world). His trip back to England from Bordeaux was fraught with danger. His mission remained Top Secret throughout the war years and beyond. His next mission was secret and dangerous. He and his secretary and chauffeur, known as The Holy Trinity, began working in bomb disposal, successfully defuzing bombs with their loyal team of Royal Engineers. His experiments led to the development of a device that plagued bomb disposal officers and saved lives. Jack was heard to say: “You can’t play puss-puss with a bomb. You’ve got to be tough with it otherwise the devil will trick you.”
