The Scrapheap: A Collection of Short Stories

By Simon Kirk

Comedy & satire, General fiction, Short-stories | eBook

The Scrapheap: A Collection of Short Stories comprises of five bawdy tales throughout regional Australia. Within these pages you will meet Joey Wilson - a scouser living in Australia on a Working Holiday visa who lands a job at Woolworths, stacking shelves. You will also find yourself out in the middle for a game a cricket where blood, sweat and tears are shed by young debutant, Nathan Hamilton. Then it’s straight to the pub with the irrepressible abattoir worker, Meat Axe, for an all in brawl or two. And of course, no Australian tale is complete without a foray on the Gold Coast, as number one ladies’ man and Borrowed Time’s bit part player, Gary “Hurricane” James, returns and does his best to etch his name into Gold Coast folklore. The place will never be the same. These short stories are available for free from the link provided below.

Greetings to all and sundry. To cut through the self-indulgence, I’ll quickly point out some facts. I derive from the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales, inhabited a grotto in the sunny metropolis of Brisbane for a while until recently emigrating to the United Kingdom. My influences range from all corners. In terms of authors, Irvine Welsh, Haruki Murakami, John Irving, Christopher Moore, Tom Robbins and Robert Rankin occupy the summit. Influences outside the realm of the written word include Justin K. Broadrick, David Pajo, Tom Waits, Vincent Gallo, Emil Amos and Willis Earl Beal. Basically any artist willing to adopt a DIY ethos. Other than artists, just your run-of-the-mill average folk. Other interests include sport and a deep and somewhat disturbing penchant for Liverpool Football Club. When the Reds aren’t occupying my time, music, reading, test cricket, rugby league, basketball and spending time with my wife and cat usually are. What would persuade you to read my first published eBook, Borrowed Time? If you like the vulgarity of Irvine Welsh, the rawness of Robert G. Barrett and the humour of Escobar Walker, then Borrowed Time will be up your street. It’s a satirical encounter inspired by Regional Australia. It’s gritty realism with an Aussie spin. Pretentious, this is not. My second eBook, entitled The Straight & Narrow, is also available from all major vendors. The sequel for Borrowed Time, Welcome to Charmsville, is currently in the works.
