The Vacant Landscape

By Celeste Johnson

Literary fiction | eBook

The novel, A Vacant Landscape, explores the vastness and depths of human emptiness against all its potential. For this group of characters, their lives intersect at the professional and deeply personal levels in their pursuits of their goals. Lives of privilege and infinite opportunity stare directly into the eyes of oppression and denial until they become intertwined and morph into more translucent spheres of intellectual, philosophical, and religious ideals. The characters must decide how far they will go in crossing boundaries - realms of the mind, geographic borders or staying power. What they will risk. What they are willing to leave behind. How high they will climb into the darkest turrets of their fears. The level of descension they will fall into Infernos of suffering - all in fulfilling goals and what they are or aren’t willing to do, to give up for themselves and for others in the pursuit of truth, success, and love.

While a firm believer in formal education, there is as much to be learned while 'out and about' - nothing can replace the value of experience. The impetuousness of wanting to create and publish a novel is often in greatest conflict with the need for patience and persistence; It's an arduous process. Whether success or failure, when we learn and grow, we always succeed. As I debut my first novel, I am more confident than ever that a writer is a writer whether they scribble in notebooks, ponder ideas on their hikes or bikes, or publish for the world - it's as innate a desire as living in the world. A self-proclaimed recovering perfectionist, a worshipper of nature, and a huge Dylan fan.
