WAR POETRY BY A WOMAN, EFFIE M ROBERTS

By Effie M Roberts

Poetry | Paperback

Effie is Fractal’s most popular writer. Any of these books would make a wonderfully special gift for anybody interested in poetry or history. Her work is unique in telling the story of a working class woman’s life, in England, in the Second World War, in the most lovely and accessible poetry. A woman, defying barriers of gender and class, she is a passionate, deep-feeling woman, with a remarkable gift. Sometimes the poems are sad, but sometimes they are very funny. She had a keen eye for the details that make up life for women in wartime.

Effie was born Effie Lawrence in 1896. She passed her childhood in Sheffield, but the family came from Gloucestershire, and they moved back to Cheltenham when she was 14. She worked as a seamstress in Cavendish House, and then married Charles Roberts, a hairdresser. She wrote poetry all through the Second World War.
