A Dangerous Affair

By L C Dale

Action & adventure, Romance | Paperback, eBook

Cassie Templeton leads a perfectly normal life but when her beloved foster brother goes missing somewhere in South America she undertakes a perilous journey to rescue him. Luke Devlin doesn’t want to be rescued. In his line of work you quickly learn that when things go wrong you’re on your own and he can live, and die, with that. What he can’t and won’t accept is putting those he loves at risk. Patrick Logan wants to help but knows the chances of seeing his friend alive again are slim. And he doesn’t need an enthusiastic amateur getting in the way, especially when he’s not sure who he’s protecting her for, Devlin or himself. Caught between duty, loyalty and revenge, love can be a dangerous affair.

I started the first novel which had a different title about ten years ago. Cassie and Devlin’s story started out in a dream, literally. I dreamt very vividly a scene in which a young woman looks at a man she has known all her life and suddenly sees him in a total different light. I knew that I wanted to know more about these two people. Then in the middle of trying to write Cassie’s story another scene in which two strangers, trapped in a dark place and unable to see each other become lovers, began to write itself. It didn’t fit with where Cassie and Dev were taking me so I put that to one side but it wouldn’t go away Then the whispers of other characters kept creeping in, and after almost four years of writing in my limited spare time I had three novels not just one! I shared them with friends and through their feedback evolved the idea of one novel, tighter, more focused and shorter than just combining the three into one. Doing that also required some hard choices. A new voice began to emerge, Patrick Logan; a bystander in the original novels he suddenly came to life and pushed his way to the front. I realised that I had to listen to what my characters were telling me. After all the years of writing them they are very real to me and the idea of putting them in harm’s way and living with them through the consequences of that can be quite emotional. I had to take a deep breath, stand back and do what, in the end, felt right.
