Bitten by Spain

By Deborah Fletcher

Biography & memoir | Paperback, eBook

What began as a series of newsy emails back home has become this delightful, honest and often hilarious account of a British couple’s move to the Spanish countryside. Unimpressed by coastal living in southern Spain and adamant that she wanted a space to call her own – and to grow her own – Deborah Fletcher dragged husband John inland. There, in the Murcian countryside, they bought a large and beautiful piece of land in a river valley, complete with almond trees, a dreamy waterfall, a whole lot of spiders and no habitable accommodation in sight. Kept company by an ever-increasing menagerie of dogs, cats and birds, as well as their Spanish neighbours (some good, some bad), they lived between a static caravan and a huge old barn during their year-long attempt to build their dream home from a pile of stones. Bitten by Spain comes into its own in this second edition. An afterword keeps readers up to speed on life on the finca el campo (countryside plot) since the book was first published in 2008, while updated photographs introduce us to the scenery and the characters – both man and beast – that make up Fletcher’s ever-eventful life in Murcia. Deborah Fletcher worked in further education in England before starting her own accountancy practice and then training in interior design. 'Born in error in the UK, I am naturally attracted to sunshine, olives, garlic and red wine,' she says of her move to Spain with her husband in 2003.

An alien changeling at birth, I was born in the UK because Fate obviously has a sense of humour. Not suited at all to that damp, grey little island, I finally completed the escape tunnel in 2003 and fled to Southern Spain. Fate, still determined to extract all possible avenues of amusement from my existence, has thrown me any number of curved balls since I have been here, and thus came into being my first book, "Bitten by Spain", which tells of my adventures in coming to terms with all the local wildlife (including the natives) in my beautiful and savage mountain valley.
