Brief Lives

By Richard French

Literary fiction | eBook

Loretta Freeman talks her friend Bruce into writing a play about a 19th century American entertainer who got into deep trouble after he strayed from his calling. Loretta also persuades her parents, who run a theatre company, to produce the play. The bulk of the novel consists of brief accounts of people involved in the production or who are interested in it. As well, the story includes two novella-length interludes that examine the entertainer and his wife from different points of view. One purpose of "Brief Lives" is to illustrate a common feature of our culture: we often compensate for the brevity of life and the inconveniences that hinder us with acts of creativity.

Richard French is an American who has lived and worked in Canada for more than 25 years. He's been in Toronto since the summer of 2007. He writes literary fiction and has more than a dozen novels uploaded to Kindle Direct Publishing. His themes are America's heritage, the 17th century, warfare, urban life, creativity and the arts. He's been a Lutheran pastor for as long as he's been in Canada, so the Christian faith figures in his writing, too.
