Life and Living

We are always getting ready to live, but never living.

When rats leave a sinking ship, where exactly do they think they are going?

Let us be poised, and wise, and our own, today.

Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience.

That man is idle who can do something better.

No one can cheat you out of ultimate success but yourself.
For the most part only the light characters travel. Who are you that you have no task to keep you at home?

Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you.

Many might go to heaven with half the labor they go to hell.

One of the illusions of life is that the present hour is not the critical decisive hour. Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year. No man has learned anything rightly until he knows that every day is Doomsday.

For every benefit you receive a tax is levied.

To finish the moment, to find the journey’s end in every step of the road, to live the greatest number of good hours, is wisdom.

Cannot we please ourselves with performing our work, or gaining truth and power, without being praised for it?
Life is a perpetual instruction in cause and effect.

The whole of what we know is a system of compensations. Each suffering is rewarded; each sacrifice is made up; every debt is paid.

This time, like all times, is a very good one if we but know what to do with it.

Every advantage has its tax.

Fate is nothing but the deeds committed in a prior state of existence.

The compensations of calamity are made apparent to the understanding also, after long intervals of time.

Commerce is of trivial import; love, faith, truth of character, the aspiration of man, these are sacred.

The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.
