As Amanda neared the top, peculiar stone pillars became visible. There were five in all, spread out in a circle. Perhaps they are the foundations of a small building? she wondered.

In their overgrown surroundings, the freestanding stone pillars looked magical to Amanda. Dew-covered flowers and vines twisted around the structures; they appeared to sparkle as the sunlight rained down on them. Amanda stepped back and slowly circled the outer perimeter.

The center isn’t very large, maybe twenty feet across. The pillars themselves only rose a few feet above her. Maybe seven or eight feet tall, she guessed. What kind of stone building would be in the middle of the woods? Maybe it’s older than the forest?

Amanda trotted toward the strange structures, wanting to get a closer look before she shared her discovery with her father. Her foot hit something hard hidden among the vegetation, and she let out a startled cry as she stumbled forward directly into one of the pillars. Her hands shot out, stopping her head from making contact.

“Amanda?” her father called after her.

“Yeah, I’m okay. You should come see this, but watch your step,” she added, eyeing the large, moss-covered stone that she had tripped on.

Amanda’s father remained silent as he trudged up the hill and began to walk around the outside of the pillars, studying them...
