The general function and purpose of the Holy Spirit differs greatly from the Old Testament to the New Testament. In the Old Testament, God sends his Holy Spirit for a specific purpose, for a specific time and through a specific person.

In the New Testament and after the ascension of Jesus into heaven, God made the Holy Spirit available to all believers at any time. He is there for us to lead us and guide us in all truth and to enable us to achieve great things in the name of Jesus. The New Testament refers to this as ‘Life in the Spirit’; the life that Jesus wants for us, the kind of life for us that He sacrificed His for – a life of freedom and power!

Although the function of the Holy Spirit differs greatly from the Old Testament to the New Testament, one characteristic of God in particular stands out in all the workings of the Holy Spirit and that is love. God’s agapé love for us that is unconditional and expects nothing in return.

Follow what the function and purpose of the Holy Spirit is in the Old Testament right from Genesis through to Malachi! An excellent bible study for all Christians! Follow the work of the Holy Spirit from creation to the end time prophets and the Babylonian exile of Israel. See how He shaped and orchestrated the lives of Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Moses, David and many more of the well-known Old Testament heroes and villains.
