Cutting the Soul

By Theresa Larsen

Biography & memoir | Paperback, eBook

Psychiatrists come and go. Matthew's reckless behavior stays. From self-harm to suicide attempts, it continues to escalate. His mom, Theresa Larsen, first spots warning signs when she discovers multiple cuts on his arms. A trip to a psychiatrist results in prescriptions but little insight, as Larsen doubts whether they're on the right track. Eventually, Matthew’s behavior leads to multiple stays in psychiatric hospitals. All Larsen can do is keep finding him help and praying that he doesn't kill himself in the process. She knows it is mental illness, but that doesn't make it any easier to cope. Soon she discovers how the experience cuts into the soul of both parent and child as they continue to hold out hope that things will get better. In Cutting the Soul, Larsen offers an inside look at Matthew's life through the inclusion of his selected journal entries, shares real-world experiences, and provides a helpful guide for anyone affected by mental illness.
