Daisy McIntosh

By Roger H. Panton

Historical fiction, Literary fiction | Paperback, eBook

Daisy McIntosh is a gripping novel by Roger H. Panton that pits family and neighbour against each other while eroding a young girl’s fragile hold on self-esteem. Set around a plantation in pre-independent Jamaica, the narrative follows young Daisy who is taken from her home by her aunt Ruth to save her from suspected abuse by her stepfather. She is then thrown into a confused world of actual abuse, betrayal, and murder. This is a cautionary tale about the power of suspicion and the fallout that can occur from hasty retribution. It highlights the complex relationships between the plantation owners and their workers and paints an evocative, authentic portrait of life around a plantation and the involvement of soldiers from the British Garrison. Daisy McIntosh offers hope for anyone haunted by a savage past and demonstrates the value of making use of opportunity, irrespective of the means by which it comes. It is a must-read for those intrigued by the influence large plantations had on the lives of the people around them, and anyone who might wish to explore the psychological toll of abuse.
