George the Orphan Crow and the Creatures of Blossom Valley

By Helen Fox

Children's | Paperback, eBook

A young crow and his parents are enjoying a day out in Penny Wood, when pheasant hunters kill his parents. The young crow's mournful cries shake the woods and wake up Plato the old owl who's been napping on his tree top. Plato finds the young crow weeping and tries to comfort him telling him he will send him to Blossom Valley, certain that the kind creatures of the community will help him cope with his loss. When Plato learns the crow doesn't have a name, he names him George, and gives him directions how to get there. George thanks Plato, and slips into the air. Back on his tree top, the owl watches the sky, certain he will catch sight of George flapping away along the path to Blossom Valley. But the path remains empty. Pity.

I live close to a big Park in London, where you'll find me feeding the squirrels and birds. I love all birds, but I'm drawn to crows in particular, for though they are the least loved of all birds, they are very intelligent and charismatic. I was inspired by a crow family, I got to know during my daily visits to the Park. Two adult crows and a young one were at the same spot every time I went to feed them, so I gathered they must be a family: mother, father, and their son? Next day, I saw the young one flying in circles and crying his little throat out. Had his parents abandoned him or been killed?
