Just Plain Stinky, Volume 7

By Peter Grant

Comedy & satire, Short stories | eBook

No one knows better than Stinky (né Edgar) Carter that a person can find drama without going to a play. His relatives, clients and friends see to that. When Stinky coaches his young nephew for a Sunday school play, the performance is more Stinky-sloppy than Stanislavsky. The church play is just a few minutes long, but the literary pot runneth over when Stinky’s cousin gets the lead in an ambitious new musical based on the complete works of Charles Dickens. Even the Ghost of Christmas Future isn’t sure if that show will ever open. Another nineteenth century author, Henry James, makes an appearance, but as a tattoo that duplicates the first edition of one of his books. Would you show a literary tattoo to your stuffy uncle? That might depend on where the tattoo is located and whether your uncle is a priest. Even Stinky isn’t sure what to do when his rector’s porn star nephew moves into the rectory. Not all of Stinky’s dramas occur on stage and screen. We learn that Stinky isn’t comfortable among the lesser deities. He manages to nod sympathetically when one of the Sons of Horus tells him, “Your name is Stinky, I live in a tomb, I feel I can talk to you,” but when it comes to shaking hands with the God of Spit, well, would you? Moving from prose to poetry, when Stinky’s sister feels she’s found her soul mate in a struggling poet, Stinky suspects impure motives. It takes all of Stinky’s craft to lead her to the fountain of knowledge without letting her see his hand on the pump Two of the stories concern bequests, as is fitting when the main character writes wills for a living. In one tale Stinky prescribes retail therapy for a confused heiress, and in another he shapes an eccentric loner’s charitable impulses. With Stinky as the pilot, the route from A to B is less direct than it would be for Noah Webster, but he makes sure there’s always a happy ending; not a concern for lexicographers. Like all the Stinky Collections this is chronological. The boys are younger in the first story in Volume 7 than they were at the end of Volume 6 and they need their youth and energy to face the challenges ahead.

Since every story in the collection has a happy ending, you realize at once, it's a work of fiction. Peter Grant has written seventy-seven Stinky Stories, which appear in fifty-seven individual titles and are collected (with bonus stories) into eight volumes, all Amazon bestsellers. His first published work was nonfiction, but he has been concentrating on fiction and bad poems for the past few years. If you’ve seen a picture of Grant, he may look fat, but it’s really bloat. Like those sad children in vintage National Geographic magazines, authors are starving worldwide, so do your part to support them.
