Liam's Story

By Ann Victoria Roberts

Historical fiction, Romance, Literary fiction | eBook

‘A superior romantic novel written with assurance and stylistic flair – featuring background detail of WW1 that adds gravitas and substance to the tale’ Publishers Weekly Curiosity takes Zoe to York in search of her mysterious forebears. There, she meets a distant cousin, Stephen Elliott, a sea-captain on leave. Drawn into the search, he finds their subsequent affair stirring echoes of an untold family history. Concealed in faded letters, photos and a wartime diary, lie the fragments of a haunting relationship between young Liam Elliott and Georgina Duncannon. Liam’s presence in their lives becomes stronger as the tragedy unfolds. As Liam leaves for Australia and ultimately WW1, the darkest secrets of the Elliott family are revealed, so too are the tumultuous affairs of two generations of star-crossed lovers. Joining a ship bound for the war-torn Middle East, Stephen is faced with some disturbing parallels between past and present, just as Zoe, alone in London, is discovering the seductive power of that piercing, impossible affair. Distance and misunderstandings lead to doubts about each other: only a near tragedy shocks them into recognition of what is important in the present. ‘A splendid piece of storytelling – about the loss of innocence and a love which endures’

A lover of history, art and the sea, Ann Victoria Roberts is the author of five historical novels, set mainly in the late 19th & early 20th centuries. She is intrigued by the parallels between past and present, and by the effect of place upon character. Bram Stoker, Capt Edward Smith of the Titanic, a modern sea-captain and a young WW1 soldier have each provided inspiration for her novels. A keen researcher, she enjoys painting pictures with words, and regards good historical fiction as a pleasurable way to discover how life was lived in the past. Originally published by Chatto & Windus in the UK and Wm Morrow in the US, Ann is now re-publishing her early novels as ebooks. ‘Louisa Elliott’ and ‘Liam’s Story’ will appear in print in 2014, together with a new memoir, ‘Life & Luck’.
