“You guys look serious,” he called as he threw the rope.
“We are. Some people arrived from the city,” Bonnie said, tying the rope to the bollard.
“What do you mean the city? Is there anyone still there?” Brit asked.
“They are down at Coney Island and came up looking for food.”
“Coney Island. Who would live there these days?”
“That’s not the point,” Lukas, one of the older ones said. “They asked for food, and lots of it. They will return in a few days for it. I assume there are more of them searching for groups who already have stores of goods.”

What I think drives this story are the characters. I felt I knew each one of them. I enjoyed their victories & grieved with them in their losses. I look forward to the next book in this series. Ginny

“But she’s only ten!” Kris insisted.
“Yes she us. But could you have done what she did?”
Kris shook her head. She knew she didn’t have the fortitude for anything like that. It was true - Carmen had saved Bennie and in turn Bennie had saved all of them and then paid for it with his life.
“Where did you bury him?” asked Chey, curious about the whole story.
“In the cemetery beside some very famous American soldiers, you’d have to talk to Sonny about where exactly.”
“That’s good,” she agreed. “He deserves at least that!”

She said nothing preferring to leave him in peace. But she did quietly excuse herself and walk to the northern corner nearer the trees, where a group had begun digging graves.
“Kojo?”
“Yes?” he said looking up as he wiped the sweat off his brow.
“One more!” she said quietly.
Kojo glanced toward Sonny on the chair overlooking the beach.
“Damn. Is he gone?”
Aimee nodded as a tear dripped down her cheek. Kojo threw his shovel at the trees. His action didn’t go unnoticed.

Gullible as ever, he jumped overboard into the chilly water and then asked her to jump also.
“No way,” she said. “I’ll go on your shoulders instead.”
“Man, you are one cunning bitch aren’t you?”
“Excuse me?” she said with a serious look.
“Oh sorry. That was just a figure of speech. No offense.”
“None taken Sonny…and sometimes I can be,” she replied with another wicked smile.
He laughed again and shook his head. She loved his laugh. “You don’t know how to read me at all do you?”
He shook his head. “And yet it seems you have me wired!”
“So it seems,” she said as she climbed on his shoulders.

He slept right up until 04:00. Annoyed at himself for oversleeping he quickly dressed and rushed outside, seeing two of the soldiers already mingling around the truck. Stealing away into the shadows and across the parade ground to behind the parade stands, he turned his radio on.
“Sorry!” he barked into the microphone.
“Bennie, where the hell you been? We were ready to come out now!”
“Carmen. No wait. Not till I call back. I’ve been busy. Sonny? Are you there?”
“Ha, we thought you’d slept in dude.”
“Yeah, wouldn’t that be funny. You set?”
“Yes, ready and waiting as is Kojo, Jenny and Claire!”
“In about an hour or so you will hear from me. Have you eaten?”
“Not yet.”
“Do it now – out!”
He now ran back to the buildings, noticing the captain’s house lights were on. That meant she was up, but was it because she heard something? ‘Too late now’, he thought as he picked up the pace reaching the trucks slightly out of breath.
“You’re ready early?”
“Yes sergeant,” they parroted.

“What isn’t strange now Jennie? And what is the correct thing to say or do in the light of all that has happened? Even the city burns now, look!” she said pointing south. A single column of black smoke rose high into the still chilled air of fall. “I’m glad I’m not there now. If there are survivors and they were Blacks or Hispanics, I wouldn’t feel safe.”
“Hey, that’s a bit racist,” Claire said, disgusted with the comment. “My best friend was African American, and top of her class at Yale. Just because some have different colored skin, doesn’t mean they are dangerous!”
“Oh of course not dear, I meant it from a gang perspective!”
“But not all colored people in the city are in gangs, or violent…” and her voice trailed off in anger.
“No, I’m sure they aren’t and Claire…they are welcome here! I’m just saying I wouldn’t want to be trapped in the city with no law and order. It’s my experience of the city; don’t twist my meaning too much!”
There was an awkward silence. This new meeting of survivors had not been the best introduction. Francine was the oldest of them and made an admission to the visitors.
“Look, I am sorry. My upbringing may indeed make me appear somewhat racist. Here on this island there is none of it as you will see. So…to begin again…welcome to Fly Island! Let me show you around and you can decide if you want to stay or move on. My house is just over there so I can spot the new arrivals. You can leave your gear there, freshen up and I’ll take you to meet the others.”
“How many are here?” Jenny asked.
“Just three at the moment. Two have gone to the mainland to find others and bring them back. We need to survive so this is going to be an organic community - we hope! There’s not much stock here yet, but we can fix that soon. You obviously didn’t see Sonny or Kojo?”
“No we came here by accident really,” Jenny said. “Where did they go?”
“Kojo?” Claire butted in. “That’s not an American name is it?”
“No Claire. Kojo is from Ghana and Sonny is African-American…” and she paused, waiting for the response. None came and she answered Jenny’s question. “They went to Queens, Brooklyn, Westchester and back up opposite here, where you left from.”

“Mommy, David said he doesn’t feel well,” she said as she came over to her mother. A tiny trickle of blood dripped down from the corner of one eye but Dana quickly wiped it away and took her upstairs without giving an indication that anything was wrong.
With a scared look, Lena now turned to Travis.
“Is this what I think it is?” she asked.
“Yes, and so it begins…” and he rushed to the bathroom not feeling well himself.

“You’re going to disobey orders now? Are you trustworthy at all?” she shouted.
“Hey! hey! Just you settle down girl. If you want to shoot me, then just shoot me!”
“I’m not going to shoot you!” she yelled back, the pistol in her hand still hanging at her side.
“Good, there are no bullets in it anyway!”
Immediately she began to hit him on the chest as he took the weapon from her.
“You lie, you deceive, you don’t trust me and yet you want me to trust you,” she screamed. “What’s to stop you raping me here?”
“Oh come on girl. You’re only ten and besides, I’d never rape anyone. Listen…” but he had to grab her shoulders and shake her hard before she looked him in the eyes.
“Listen…listen to me! I watched them shoot a colonel out of the sky who was returning to set that girl free, I lost some faith in the military at that point. The major gave me this mission knowing it was important and that being a survivor; I could mix with other survivors till I found one who was immune. But I…it…damn it!”

“Where’s the girl?” he demanded of Lewis.
“Who are you to talk to a lieutenant like that?” Cory said
“And who are you to talk to me like that?” the soldier responded. Cory was still in his private uniform.
“This soldier – soldier…” Lewis advised, “Has been promoted to corporal and then lieutenant in a single day. How long did it take you to reach officer cadet?
“Sorry Sir. The girl - where is she?”
“We have no girl here!” Cory replied.
“But there is a girl… a woman then. Is there a woman here?”
“No!”
“I don’t understand. We were sent to retrieve a woman who you were holding for her blood. She hadn’t been sick apparently.”
“Is that so?” Cory asked, trying to stall everything as long as possible.
“Yes. Have you not had a woman here?”
“Yes.”
“So you do have a woman here?” the soldier asked.
“No!”
“Damn it Sir…and sorry Sir, but you are making me confused.”
The soldier’s radio cracked to life.
“Do you have her? They say she’s not down here!”
“No Sir, I’m on the roof. I’m not sure what’s happening.”
“Well someone down here saw her with a Corporal Walsolski. Is there a corporal up there?”
“Is there?” the soldier asked.
They shook their heads and Lewis smirked slightly.
“He was!” the sergeant pointed to Cory. “He was made lieutenant just yesterday.”
“So you are Corporal Walsolski?”
“No.”
“Yes he is,” the sergeant insisted.
“No,” Lewis and Cory said together.
“Damn it Sirs, what’s going on. Are you Walsolski or not?”
“Yes I am.”
“I thought you said you weren’t just a second ago.”
“No, I said I wasn’t Corporal Walsolski. But I am Lieutenant Walsolski which means I outrank you. I was appointed that from Colonel Jacobs this morning.”
“But he was just shot down!”
“Yes but the lieutenant here was witness to it also. So as I understand the military - it stands.”
“The colonel was a traitor…so I was told – Sir!” the soldier said, more than a little irritated at the conversation.
“Well what you are told and what is reality may not be the same thing,” Lewis said to the soldier. “He was attempting to save a life!”
“And I understand we are attempting to save four hundred and seventy two of them – Sir,” he said cynically. “Now after that distraction…Where is the woman…Lieutenant?”
“I don’t know!”
“How could you not know?”
“We lost her!”
“You’ve lost her? How could you lose her?”
“She attempted an escape. I shot her and she fell into the river.”
“She’s dead?”
“Unless one can survive both a bullet and a lungful of water,” Cory replied.
“Something is not right here Sir, are you lying to me?”
“Are you accusing me of lying?”
The soldier sighed and hit his radio. “I need you up here Sir!”
“Almost there,” a voice said a little out of breath. A few seconds later a uniformed officer reached the roof followed by three others. He was immediately recognized as a Major. That made him the highest ranking officer in base and everyone saluted.
“Isaacs, what’s going on here? Where is she?”
“This one said he shot her Sir.”
“Don’t tell porkies son. We know Jacobs called the base before he left. Where is she? Have you hidden her?”
“No Sir.”
“Then where is she?”
“I don’t know Sir.”
“And why not Private?”
‘Lieutenant!”
“What’s that Isaacs?”
“He’s been promoted to corporal and then lieutenant.”
“Really? When?”
“Today,” all three said in unison.
“Today? That’s absurd! By whom?”
“Colonel Jacobs,” Lewis said. “And I was witness to it!”
“Damn shame that. He might have been a traitor, but I’ll hold with his commendation unless I find you are a traitor too…?”
“Walsolski Sir.”
“Walsolski? The one who brought her here in the first place? Ha, make no mistake then…this boy would not set her free willingly. He brought her in. So let’s all back up a bit shall we? I asked why you don’t know where she is…Lieutenant.”

“Oh great, the cops,” Kirk moaned. “Who called the cops?”
“Oh sorry that was me,” admitted Euan. “I didn’t know it was you. I just saw her pointing a gun at someone - that was all.”
Greg began to wake and they tried to pull him to his feet just as the patrol car pulled in sharply over the curb. Two officers exited, one with his hand on his holster. Greg was dropped again.
“Everything okay here folks?”
“No officer. My husband is unwell.”
A confused look came over his face. “We had reports of someone in the area threatening with a gun. Is…” and he noticed Brenda with the pistol still in her hand. Instantly he drew his own weapon.
“Ma’am. Can you please put the gun down?”
“I had it because of him,” she said pointing in Kirk’s direction.
“What about him?” the officer said.
“He’s done something to my husband,” she said.
“Which one is your husband,” the officer asked looking at all three men.
“This one is her husband,” Euan said pointing to Greg lying awkwardly in the seat. “Kirk brought him here like this?”
“What did you do to him?” the officer asked Kirk.
“I didn’t do anything to him,” he stated.
“Dan, put this one in the car will you?” the officer asked of his partner.
“Now hang on one minute…” Kirk began, “I’ve done nothing but bring this man home…” he said before seeing the opportunity that presented itself. “Officer - she still has that gun you asked her to put down earlier!”
The officer’s attention was now successfully diverted.
“Quite right. Please put the weapon on the ground Ma’am.”
“Oh great, so now it’s all back on me. This one came to my door banging on it and saying he has my husband,” she said waving the gun around as she gestured.
“Ma’am!” the officer yelled. “Not with a loaded weapon!”
“Oh, it’s not loaded,” she said pulling out the clip to reveal the fact it was empty.
“Ma’am!”
“It’s empty…look!” she said until the officer shook his head. Turning it over she was shocked to find the clip full of bullets.
