Action & adventure, Sci-Fi | eBook

In 2075, David Gill, an engineer, arrives in Los Angeles to sell food to Moonbeam Enterprises. He finds Moonbeam reeling from a fraudulent stock sale and he is made an offer he cannot refuse: join the first expedition to settle on Mars as part of a Moonbeam team and set up major food production facilities for a giant corporation that is temporarily banned from going to Mars, and which cannot then be associated with Martian settlement. As the venture proceeds, David becomes increasingly suspicious of the motives of Moonbeam's leader, Robbie Newall. More than once he is shot at, but perhaps his biggest problem involves a mercurial Jacqui Tennant, a Space Corps pilot who desperately wants to keep the large corporations off Mars. When on Mars, David's troubled marriage disintegrates when his wife takes up with Robbie, encounters with Jacqui become increasingly unpredictable, then David becomes aware that Robbie's objective is to create a Mars bubble through stock floats on Earth, and the absence of anything real to float is no problem. Then, when David makes a totally unexpected discovery that guarantees the settlement will be successful, he also learns that Moonbeam is floating his discovery. David, and a few members of the Space Corps, feel they must stop this fraud, but there is a problem: Newall has smuggled guns to Mars and men to use them. The story is full of action in unusual environments, but it also shows the anatomy of a particular type of fraud, and shows some of the signs of what to look for. Also, the "unexpected discovery" involves an alternative theory of planetary formation, which delayed this publication as it was developed. An appendix outlines this alternative in simple language for those interested.

A semiretired scientist who, despite owning his own research company, has also published a hundred scientific papers, and has since also published three scientific ebooks that present alternative theories to standard theory in both the way planets form, and for quantum mechanics. He began writing a "future history" with the intent of showing what should not happen, but might, if we do not think about our future. One objective is to show the way scientific thinking might help solving these problems, at the same time as showing imaginative stories. He is married, with two successful children, and lives in Lower Hutt, New Zealand.
