Shieldmaiden

By Marianne Whiting

Historical fiction, Action & adventure | Paperback, eBook

In 934, the English are fighting the Norse for supremacy in the North. Worship of the old gods is challenged by Christianity. Traditional loyalties are tested and, when seen to fail, revenge is swift and violent. In Cumbria a man is outlawed and killed. His daughter is faced with a life of destitution and servitude. Her only option is to appeal to the King of Norway to reverse his judgement and allow her to inherit the family farm. But Norway is far away and Sigrid is the penniless daughter of an outlaw with only her wits and her skill with the sword to help her cause.

I was born and grew up in Sweden. I came to England to study for a year, met my husband and remained. I love Cumbria and Yorkshire where the Viking heritage is still strong and I like to challenge the traditional view of Vikings as mad marauders and remind people that they were also explorers, traders and farmers. I was pleased to have Shieldmaiden longlisted for the Rubery International Book Award in 2013. The second book in the trilogy about Sigrid is finished and I'm looking for an agent and publisher. Meanwhile I give talks on for example: Britons, Saxons, Vikings - Who Are the English? and What Did the Vikings Ever Do For Us?
