Simple

By Anita Dawes

General fiction, Horror | Paperback, eBook

Simple was not his real name, just the cruel nickname his brother Tommy had decided suited him better. He was a huge bear of a man, born with a frustrating stutter and the mind of an innocent child. His given name was Ethan. Leanne hates the way her brother is bullied and tormented, bravely defending him and hopelessly trying to shield him from the merciless abuse he is constantly subjected to at the hands of his family, even though she was often hurt in the process. Although she is just a child, she understands the mysterious and gentle way he has with animals and his need to be outdoors, but she is also aware of his immense strength. Those huge hands that could nurse an injured bird back to health could just as easily break a man in two if he had a mind to. All her life Leanne had heard the vicious rumours about all the things Simple was punished for doing, but chose to ignore them all until he does something she cannot ignore. He falls in love with a woman he sees painting on the river bank and decides to take her, hiding her safely away from his brothers. But when the woman falls ill because he forgets to feed her, Leanne is forced to take matters into her own hands. When she discovers that the woman has a husband and is pregnant, Leanne's life gradually spirals out of control. Making Simple understand what they have to do is not easy and Leanne was not prepared for level of violence they were subjected to from the family, least of all when her older brother Tommy tried to burn them alive in their hideout.

Hi, my name is Anita and although I am nearly 70, I am by no means a 'silver surfer'. I have been writing fiction novels for a while now, but never had any luck with the mainstream publishers. They loved some of my books, but found it hard to slot them into a category! It came tantalisingly close, but no cigar, as they say. Now I am retired and with the help of my sister Jaye, (who can actually use a word processor) I decided to dust off some of my manuscripts and try to achieve the impossible in this digital world. I thank God for my family, for I have a second chance to find out if anyone out there might like the books I write...
