SUN, SEA AND BETRAYAL. A True Story

By Penelope Diane Brown

General non-fiction, Biography & memoir | Paperback, eBook

Arriving in Morocco in 2002, with the hope of a wonderful retirement, beautiful new villa, Moroccan husband of many years, sun, sea and sand nearby, what more could I have asked for? Well I never guessed it wouldn't last, my marriage was solid or so I thought. How one event turned my life upside down, and I was lucky to get away eventually. Starting with my early life and how things were so different in the world then, compared with today. The village community at that time, how we managed before the Supermarkets came along in the mid sixties. One phone box in the village otherwise writing letters was the only way of communication. Today we take mobile phones, and land-line phones for granted, but apart from the local shop, pub, and post office, no one had phones in their homes until around the early part of the 1970's in my village. I look back now with sadness as Morocco is a beautiful country. I left behind everything, my middle daughter, sister-in-laws and their families, friends, neighbours and the culture. I have been back recently to visit my sister in law, and I look across at the lovely big villa that was once mine, what had been my dream home, my design, my joy. 'Oh well' my sister in law says, “at least you have your freedom.” I do, and I'm grateful for that.

I grew up in a small village in the South West of England, surrounded by open countryside and just a short walk away from the famous Westbury White Horse. A chalk horse carved into the hillside. Wonderful childhood, loving devoted parents, and a younger brother and sister. Tragedy at the age of 16yrs when my mother passed away suddenly leaving my father with two young children to care for. Time moves on and I marry a Moroccan man, married for many years and eventually retiring to Morocco to live in my newly built large dream villa, with my three children from this marriage. As you will read, my dream retirement does not last for very long and I became a prisoner in what had been my wonderful home. I have a strong personality which kept me going, and my children who have always been there for me. Now back in the UK, I feel blessed to have my freedom again. I love writing and decided to tell my story, hoping that no other women would get caught in the same situation as I did. Maybe I was naive but when you love and trust your partner you expect to be treated with respect, especially when you leave everything behind to be with him. I have since qualified as a Cognitive Hypnotherapist and NLP Practitioner which helped me work through my own issues, and although I had to go through those difficult times I can now move on with my life.
