Space Opera

First used in 1941, the term "Space Opera" has changed its definition over time. Now, in the early 2000's, if a book is long, well-written, large-scale in its plot (like "Star Wars"), based on a heroic theme and characters, probably militaristic, set in the reasonably far-off future, in space or on other worlds, and where the goodies always defeat the baddies, then it belongs in the space opera genre. Space opera is nothing to do with singing and fat ladies.
