You Can't Run

By Mandy Thomas

Biography & memoir | Paperback, Hardback, eBook, Audiobook, App

Mandy Thomas is the survivor of one of the most vicious domestic violence cases the UK has ever seen – when convicted, her ex was branded ‘category a’ and the judge declared him ‘vicious, evil and calculated’. She was just 18 when she met the man who would change her life forever. Young and vulnerable, she quickly fell under his spell but she soon found herself part of a cruel and violent relationship she couldn’t escape. She put up with years of beatings and rapes in order to protect her children, until one day her ex went too far. Mandy was tortured for four days in her home, in front of her children, with a blowtorch, glass, knives, and other implements. Her ordeal ended only when her daughter told her teacher, ‘I think my mummy is dead.’ Mandy’s ex was sentenced on 3 March 2003 to nine years’ imprisonment for G.B.H. with intent and false imprisonment, and six years for rape. He was given a 10-year licence with 18 restrictions, plus a lifetime on the sex offenders’ register. You Can’t Run is Mandy’s searingly honest and moving true story. Today, Mandy is a Women’s Aid campaign speaker and also works with local services and the police. Her son, X Factor finalist Jahmene Douglas, is a Women’s Aid Ambassador for Children and Young People. Mandy is determined to improve the system that let her down and help other women to spot the signs of controlling relationships – before it’s too late. She firmly believes a change needs to come. She was recently awarded the Women of Power Award 2014.
